There are many prepositions in the Russian language. They do not change, but the words after the prepositions change in cases.
Causal prepositions indicate the reason:
- БЛАГОДАРЯ + кому? чему? (Dative case) - always used to indicate a favorable cause, with a positive result.
Благодаря́ хоро́шей пого́де мы устро́или пикни́к в па́рке.
Благодаря́ роди́телям у меня́ бы́ло счастли́вое де́тство.
Благодаря́ мне ты доби́лся успе́ха.
- ИЗ-ЗА + кого? чего? (Genitive case) - used to indicate the cause that led to negative results.
И́з-за плохо́й пого́ды мы самолёт не полете́л.
И́з-за брата она́ опозда́ла на встре́чу.
И́з-за его́ слов все о́чень расстро́ились.
- ПО + чему? (Dative case) - negative, undesirable reasons, do not depend on the will of man.
По оши́бке он назва́л жену́ други́м и́менем.
Я сде́лала оши́бку в те́сте по невнима́тельности.
+ common options: по оши́бке (by mistake), по чи́стой случа́йности (by pure chance), по привы́чке (by habit), по рассе́янности (by absent-mindedness), по семе́йным обстоя́тельствам (by family circumstances), по состоя́нию здоро́вья (by state of health).
- ИЗ + чего? (Genitive case) - to indicate cause, conscious action.
Из интере́са к Росси́и он на́чал изуча́ть ру́сский язы́к.
Из го́рдости он не сказа́л ей ни сло́ва.
+ common options: из жела́ния уви́деть / поня́ть (out of a desire to see / understand), из чу́вства до́лга / любви́ / жа́лости / отве́тственности (out of a sense of debt / love / pity / responsibility).
- ОТ + чего? (Genitive case) - various reasons that do not depend on the subject of the action, the actor, as well as changes in the state of a person or object.
От ра́дости де́ти забы́ли о за́втраке и пода́рках.
Они́ пло́хо сдали экза́мен от уста́лости.
+ preposition ОТ often used with certain verbs: дрожа́ть (tremble), пла́кать (cry), смея́ться (laugh), заболе́ть (get sick), поги́бнуть (die), умере́ть (die).
Some more prepositions that are used in the official and scientific style of speech:
- ВСЛЕДСТВИЕ + чего? (Genitive case)
- В РЕЗУЛЬТАТЕ + чего? (Genitive case)
- ВВИДУ + чего? (Genitive case)
- В СИЛУ + чего? (Genitive case)
- В СВЯЗИ С + чем? (Instrumental case)

- вы принесли на встречу не тот проект (you brought the wrong project to the meeting);
- вы не поздоровались с директором (you did not say hello to the director).
2.What preposition should be used: из, из-за, по, от, благодаря.
В последнее время он редко ходит в театр ... (работа).
Она здесь не работает, но часто ... (привычка) заходит сюда.
Я взял отпуск ... (семейные обстоятельства).
Мы приехали на встречу только ... (уважение) к вас.
Он подошёл так тихо, что ... (неожиданность) я испугалась.
