The Accusative case (4) is considered one of the most important cases in the Russian language, since it is used to designate the object of action and the direction of action or movement.
Let's repeat the meanings, or situations of using the Accusative case (4) in Russian (in our blog, we look at situations through questions):
- questions КОГО? ЧТО? / WHO? WHAT? - to denote the object of action.
Кого́ ты встре́тил вчера́ на вечери́нке? → Я встре́тил лу́чшЕГО дру́гА.
Что вы чита́ете по у́трам? → Я чита́ю све́жУЮ газе́тУ.
- questions НА КОГО? НА ЧТО? / AT WHAT? AT WHOM? - to indicate the direction of action. It is used after verbs:
ста́вить/поста́вить to put (vertically)
класть/положи́ть to put, to lay down
На кого́ она́ смо́трит? → Она́ смо́трит на но́вОГО преподава́телЯ.
На что ты поста́вил кни́гу? → Я поста́вил кни́гу на са́мУЮ высо́кУЮ по́лкУ.
приглаша́ть/пригласи́ть to invite
провожа́ть/проводи́ть to accompany, to see off
Куда́ ты идёшь? → Я иду́ на студе́нческУЮ вечери́нкУ.
- question КУДА? / TO WHERE? - to indicate the direction of movement.
приглаша́ть/пригласи́ть to invite
провожа́ть/проводи́ть to accompany, to see off
Куда́ ты идёшь? → Я иду́ на студе́нческУЮ вечери́нкУ.
Куда́ вы е́здили отдыха́ть ле́том? → Мы е́здили в со́лнечнУЮ Испа́ниЮ.
From examples of usage you see that it is necessary to change the endings of nouns and adjectives..
The endings of nouns and adjectives in the Accusative (4) singular and plural are varied. They depend on:
- gender of noun (ОН, ОНА or ОНО);
- its endings in the Nominative case (1);
- animate (КТО?) or inanimate (ЧТО?) noun.
So, if the noun is masculine or neuter animate, then it changes in the form of the Genitive case:
Accusative case (4) = Genitive case (2)
But if the noun is masculine or neuter inanimate, then there will be no changes:
Accusative case (4) = Nominative case (1)
For the nouns in plural, the gender is not important, since all animate will change in the form of the Genitive case (2), and all inanimate will not change, that is, in the form they will be in the Nominative case (1).
The same thing happens with adjectives, which depend on gender, number and animate / inanimate nouns.
So, changes of nouns in the Accusative case (4) are here.
And now we will look at the changes in the endings of adjectives in the Accusative case (4):
Прилагательные в Винительном падеже (4) отвечают на вопросы ↙
КАКОЕ? / WHICH? (neuter gender, inanimate),
КАКОЙ? / WHICH? (masculine gender, inanimate),
КАКОГО? / WHICH? (neuter and masculine gender, animate),
КАКУЮ? / WHICH? (feminine gender, inanimate),
КАКИХ? / WHICH? (plural, animate)
Conclusion: For adjectives in a feminine gender, animate and inanimate are not important.
ОНА: -АЯ → -УЮ, -ЯЯ → -ЮЮ
And for adjectives in the neuter and masculine gender, as well as in the plural, animate adjectives change the endings ↙
ОН: -ЫЙ → -ОГО, -ОЙ → -ОГО, -ИЙ (after К, Г, Х) → -ОГО, -ИЙ (after consonants) → -ЕГО
ОНО: -ОЕ → -ОГО, -ЕЕ → -ЕГО
ОНИ: -ЫЕ → -ЫХ, -ИЕ → -ИХ
By the way, for the plural the gender of the adjective is not important. =)
