Usage of Genitive case (part 2)

Usage of Genitive case (part 2)
The Genitive case (2) in Russian is used very often, since it has many uses. Today we will talk about the most frequent.

To understand the cases in Russian, you only need to ↙
1. remember the situations when they are used (there is a strict system),
2. correctly change endings in words.
  • questions ЧЕЙ? ЧЬЯ? ЧЬЁ? ЧЬИ? / WHOSE? - object of belonging
We have already considered how to identify belogning with questions ЧЕЙ? ЧЬЯ? ЧЬЁ? ЧЬИ? / WHOSE? with the possessive pronouns.
Another option is to use the Genitive case (2) after the object.

Э́то Михаи́л. А э́то его́ молоко́. → Чьё э́то молоко́? → Э́то молоко́ Михаи́лА.
Э́то Мари́на. А э́то её роди́тели. → Чьи э́то роди́тели? → Э́то роди́тели Мари́нЫ.

Pay attention, that the questions of ЧЕЙ? ЧЬЯ? ЧЬЁ? ЧЬИ? / WHOSE? we assign to object, so it is important correctly determine the gender and number. And the person who owns the object will be put in the Genitive case (2) and used afterwards.
  • question У КОГО? - to denote belonging in the construction "Who has..."
One more variant to show belonging in Russian language - construction "Who has...".
We had already the variant of this construction used with personal pronouns in the Genitive case (2): У меня́ есть кни́га. А у тебя́ есть слова́рь.

У кого́ есть молоко́? → У Михаи́лА есть молоко́.
У кого́ есть роди́тели? → У Мари́нЫ есть роди́тели.
  • questions НЕТ КОГО? НЕТ ЧЕГО? - if there is no object, it is absent
You already know the construction "I have..." if there is the object in the present, past and future.
And if you want to say about the absence?
In this case, the Russians use the words нет/не было/не будет and after negation, only nouns in the Genitive case (2) are used.
    Зимо́й в Москве́ нет со́лнцА.
    У неё нет му́жА.
    ЖенЫ́ нет до́ма.
The options for past and future use you can find here.
  • questions ЧЕГО? (какой? какая? какое? какие?) / WHAT? - when an object is determined with the help of another subject, to which of or belongs to
На стене́ виси́т ка́рта ми́рА.
Э́тот го́род нахо́дится на се́вере Росси́И.
  • after numerals and special words!
- 2, 3, 4 + Genitive case singular (!!!)
- 5 - 20... + Genitive plural (!!!)

Yes, it is difficult to understand, but in the Russian language with numerals are used different cases and their forms. So, if the number 1, 21, 31 and so on, we can use nouns of the Nominative case - оди́н го́род, одна́ страна́, одно́ о́бщество.

If there are words 2, 3 and 4 in the number, then we use the noun of the Genitive case in the singular - два го́родА, три́дцать три президе́нтА, пятьдеся́т четы́ре маши́нЫ.

And if in the number there are words from 5 to 20 and all the others, you use the noun of the Genitive case in the plural - пятна́дцать стран, со́рок друзе́й, сто биле́тОВ.

Also, with the words "сколько", "столько", "много", "мало", "несколько" the nouns of the Genitive case are used in the plural:
    В аудито́рии мно́го людЕ́Й.
    У меня́ есть не́сколько вопро́сОВ.
  • questions ОТКУДА? и ОТ КОГО?/ FROM WHERE? FROM WHOM? - the starting point of a movement or the person from whom the action proceeds
Роди́тели вы́шли из ко́мнатЫ.
Семья́ уе́хала с о́стровА.
Я уе́хал из дере́внИ от ба́бушкИ.

Pay attention that when answering the question ОТ КОГО? the preposition "от" is always used.
But with the question of ОТКУДА? there are two variants of the preposition "из" and "с/сщ". Everything is simple! If you remember the usage of prepositions "в" and "на" for showing the location, then you will easily remember the pattern:
preposition "в" when answering the question ОТКУДА? should be replaced with the preposition "из",
and the preposition "на" when answering the question ОТКУДА? must be replaced by the preposition "c/co".
  • question ГДЕ?/WHERE? - when used with prepositions that indicate the location: У, ОКОЛО (near), ВОКРУГ (around), НЕДАЛЕКО ОТ (near), ПОЗАДИ (back), НАПРОТИВ (before), ПОСРЕДИ (in the middle)
Где расту́т дере́вья? → Дере́вья расту́т о́коло до́мА.
Где́ мы с тобо́й встре́тимся? → Дава́й встре́тимся недалеко́ от остано́вкИ.
Где́ ты был вчера́? → Вчера́ я был у до́кторА.
  • question КУДА?/WHERE? - when used with prepositions that denote the movement of ДО (to), МИМО (by), ВДОЛЬ (along) the object
Авто́бус идёт до це́нтрА.
Мы прое́хали от Москвы́ до Санкт-Петербу́ргА за 4 ча́са.
Я прошёл ми́мо магази́нА.
  • more variants of usage the Genitive case (2) with prepositions: БЕЗ (without - absence), ДЛЯ (for - predestination), ИЗ-ЗА (because - reason), КРОМЕ (except - exception)
Я не могу́ пить ко́фе без са́харА.
Он купи́л э́ту кни́гу для сестрЫ́.
Мы опозда́ли на уро́к и́з-за авто́бусА.
Он наде́л всё, кро́ме ша́пкИ.
  • questions КОГО? ЧЕГО?/WHOM? WHAT? - after comparative degree.
Э́та соба́ка бо́льше ко́шкИ, но ме́ньше слонА́.
Андре́й ста́рше Ива́нА, но мла́дше А́ннЫ.

At the end, we suggest once again repeat the endings of the noun of the Genitive case (2)
