Ordinal numerals

Ordinal numerals
In Russian there are ordinal numerals that determine the place of an object in a row and answer the questions "Кото́рый? Кото́рая? Кото́рое? Кото́рые? / Which?"

According to the form and the role in the sentence, ordinal numerals are similar to adjectives.
They vary in numbers, genders and cases as well as adjectives. Their form depends on the noun. So, for example, if a noun is neuter gender singular, then the ordinal numeral will have the form of the neuter gender singular - "первое место".

Ordinal numerals are formed from the basis of cardinal numerals and the endings of adjectives:
пят(ь) + -ЫЙ, -АЯ, -ОЕ, -ЫЕ
шест(ь) + -ЫЙ, -АЯ, -ОЕ, -ЫЕ

Specially formed the ordinal numerals пе́рвый (from оди́н), второ́й  (from два), тре́тий, -ья, -ье, -ьи (from три), четвёртый (from четы́ре), седьмо́й (from семь), сороково́й (from со́рок), со́тый (from сто), ты́сячный (from ты́сяча) and миллио́нный (from миллио́н).

Note that in the words второ́й, шесто́й, седьмо́й, восьмо́й, сороково́й stress falls on the ending, and for all other ordinal numbers - пе́рвый , пя́тый, четвёртый, etc. - on the base.

Complex ordinal numerals of the 50th - 80th and 200th - 900th are formed from the Genitive case (2) of the corresponding cardinal numerals and have the endings of adjectives:
   пятьдеся́т (Nominative case (1)) - пяти́десят(и) (Genitive case (2)) - пятидеся́тый
   семьсо́т (Nominative case (1)) - семисо́т (Genitive case (2)) - семисо́тый
   две́сти (Nominative case (1)) - двухсо́т (Genitive case (2)) - двухсо́тый

Conclusion: Ordinal numerals (as well as adjectives) are consistent in gender, number and case with nouns:
Я увидел первого футболиста. - Accusative case (4)
Сегодня двадцать третье (число) апреля. - Nominative case (1)
Он сидит в первом ряду на третьем месте. - Prepositional case (6)
