Usage of Accusative case (singular)

Usage of Accusative case (singular)
The Accusative case (4) is considered one of the most important cases in Russian (and for some reason one of the most difficult =)) ), since it is used to designate an object and direction of action or motion.

To understand the cases in Russian, you only need to ↙
1. remember the situations when they are used (there is a strict system),
2. correctly change endings in words.

So, in a simple phrase - "Я люблю́ Москву́" (I love Moscow), the name of the capital of Russia - Moscow - is used in the Accusative case (4), because it is an object of love. That is why the ending changes in the word "Москва":  -У.
And this will happen with every word - noun, adjective, pronoun, numeral.

The nouns in the Accusative (4) singular and plural are varied. It depends on:
- kind of noun (ОН, ОНА or ОНО);
- its endings in the Nominative case (1);
- animate (КТО?) or inanimate (ЧТО?) noun.
So, if the noun is masculine or neuter animate, then it changes in the form of the Genitive case:
   Accusative case (4) = Genitive case (2)
But if the noun is masculine or neuter inanimate, then there will be no changes:
   Accusative case (4) = Nominative case (1)
For the nouns in plural, the gender is not important, since all animate will change in the form of the Genitive case (2), and all inanimate will not change, that is, the form they will be in the Nominative case (1).

Let's see the ending of nouns in the Accusative case (4) singular
ОН / Masculine
ОНА / Feminine
ОНО / Neuter
inanimate (что?)

animate (кого?)

And now let's see the situations, when is used the Accusative case (4) (we tried to explain the situation through questions):
  • questions КОГО? ЧТО? / WHO? WHAT? - to denote the object of action
Кого́ ты встре́тил вчера́ на вечери́нке? → Я встре́тил дру́гА.
Что вы чита́ете по у́трам? → Я чита́ю газе́тУ.

It is mainly used after transitive verbs (- these verbs are used with a noun that denote a direct object), such as:
    де́лать/сде́лать to do
    чита́ть/прочита́ть to read
    писа́ть/написа́ть to write
    переводи́ть/перевести́ to translate
    повторя́ть/повтори́ть to repeat
    учи́ть/вы́учить to learn
изуча́ть/изучи́ть to study and also:     знать/узна́ть to know
    по́мнить to remember
    забыва́ть/забы́ть to forget
    люби́ть/полюби́ть to love
    ви́деть/уви́деть to see
    смотре́ть/посмотре́ть to watch, to look
    слу́шать/послу́шать to listen
    слы́шать/услы́шать to hear
    встреча́ть/встре́тить to meet
иска́ть/найти́ to look for, to search
    брать/взять to take
    ждать/подожда́ть to wait
and other.
  • questions НА КОГО? НА ЧТО? / AT WHAT? AT WHOM? - to indicate the direction of action
На кого́ она́ смо́трит? → Она́ смо́трит на преподава́телЯ.
На что ты поста́вил кни́гу? → Я поста́вил кни́гу на по́лкУ.

It is used after verbs:
    смотре́ть/посмотре́ть to watch, to look
    ста́вить/поста́вить to put (vertically)
класть/положи́ть to put, to lay down
  • question КУДА? / TO WHERE? - to indicate the direction of movement
Куда́ ты идёшь? → Я иду́ на по́чтУ
Куда́ вы е́здили отдыха́ть ле́том? → Мы е́здили в Испа́ниЮ.

It is used after the verbs of motion (see here and here) ;)
and with verbs:
    приглаша́ть/пригласи́ть to invite
провожа́ть/проводи́ть to accompany, to see off

Conclusion: The accusative (4) is used with transitive verbs and with verbs of direction and action.
In order to properly use the Accusative case, you must be able to correctly change the endings (see the table of changes in the endings of nouns in the singular).
